1. The Data Intercept Technology Unit (DITU): NSA’s Alter Ego in the FBI

    November 22, 2013

If you think the National Securirity Agency (NSA) is secretive, wait till you meet the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s electronic eavesdropping unit, the Data Intercept Technology Unit (DITU). Headquartered in Quantico, Virgina, the diminutive DITU is so secretive that it makes NSA look like a collection of public relations flaks by comparison.

Shane Harris has just written the first in-depth profile of the DITU for Foreign Policy magazine, providing the first details about the signals intelligence (SIGINT) collection work that this unit does for both the FBI and NSA. Harris’ article makes clear that NSA would not be able to perform a myriad of key SIGINT collection functions, such as fiber optic cable intercept and the PRISM internet surveillance program, without DITU’s help.

Shane Harris’s article on DITU can be read here.
